Interlochen Center for the Arts

Founded in 1928 and nestled in the woods of Northern Michigan, the Interlochen Center for the Arts is one of the most prestigious arts schools in the country bringing together

2019 Chapman Stick Workshop

In 1969 while experimenting with several custom made guitars, Emmett Chapman came up with idea of turning his guitar upright and approaching two-handed tapping with his hands parallel to the frets. This positional change was the foundation of the "Free Hands" technique and would lead to the creation of the Chapman Stick. An instrument dedicated to this technique.

In 2009, we celebrated 40 years of "Free Hands" with the first Interlochen Stick Workshop hosted in partnership with the Interlochen College of Creative Arts. That first workshop featured instruction from Emmett Chapman himself along with long time player and teacher Greg Howard. In the years since, we have hosted five of these workshops featuring instruction from several of the worlds best players.

In 2019, Steve Adelson, Greg Howard, and Bob Culbertson all help us celebrate 50 years of "Free Hands" and 10 years at Interlochen with four days of workshops and performances.
